Best Electric, Gas, Hydraulic & Manual Log Splitters

The winter is still in full swing, and every time you think Spring is on its way, Mother Nature sends another snow storm your way! It’s not all bad though – what’s better than snuggling up in a cozy blanket in front of a roaring fireplace?

But to have a fire, you need suitable logs, and just bringing in freshly-sawn logs fresh off the tree simply isn’t good enough. They need to be split to the right size to give you that cozy fire and splitting them manually can be hard work. Splitting logs with an axe takes time, effort and if you aren’t careful, you can end up with a serious, long-lasting injury.

The answer to this problem is a log splitter, which will do the hard work for you, saving you from potentially serious injuries and cutting your wood splitting time.

If a log splitter is something you are interested in getting, you will find that, at this time of writing, a simple search of “log splitter” on Amazon will give you over 1000 results with a wide range of prices – that’s a lot to choose between! So to help you out, we have selected what we believe to be the best models and we are going to discuss them to help you decide which one is best for you.

How To Calculate The Tonnage You Need

We have created a simple calculator to help you decide how many tons of power you will need from your log splitter. Simply choose a type of wood and select the log diameter of it.

Our calculator will then provide the wood classification, hardness and how many tons of log splitting power you need. You can use it multiple times for each type of wood you are hoping to split.

It has a 2-stage gear pump which adjusts the flow and pressure of the splitter depending on its load. When there is no resistance, it will deliver high flow and low pressure, and when there is pressure from a log being split it will deliver low flow and high pressure. This increases your productivity even more when splitting the logs.

Champion Dual Position

Dual Position

For when you want to change the operation position of the Champion 100251, you can easily switch the arrangement between horizontal to vertical by removing the lock pin, turning the handle and replacing the lock pin into the pivot bracket. This means that you don’t need to strain yourself by lifting heavy logs onto your log splitter again.

The horizontal position is suitable for lighter logs which you can easily load onto the beam. The vertical position can also be used for lighter logs, but it is also suitable for use with heavy logs which are difficult to loads onto the beam.

It also has an automatic shutoff which engages when the oil runs low to prevent damage to the equipment and yourself. It is an extremely versatile log splitter.

The Champion 100251 is equipped with a set of 16-inch (40.6 cm) pneumatic, DOT-approved wheels, and a 2 inch (5 cm) ball hitch coupler with an extended tongue, which enable it to be towed by most ATVs and UTVs. It can be towed at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour (72.4 kmph). But if you don’t have an ATV or UTV, you don’t need to tow your Champion 100251, as it has also been designed to fit in most truck beds.

Of course, by being powered by gasoline, you don’t need to worry about being limited by cables and available sockets. It can fit in with your needs – you can split your logs wherever you need to (apart from inside), without restrictions.

Sun Joe LK10M Logger Joe

If you are looking of a log splitter that will make log splitting easier and more efficient, but you don’t want to lose the full physical workout you get from splitting wood with an axe, then this is the log splitter for you.

This is a manual-powered log splitter, but its powerful hydraulic ram still delivers up to 10 tons of driving force, meaning it is still capable of splitting logs up to 18 inches (45.7 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide.

It is environmentally-friendly, easy to move around and is maintenance-free! It is a great choice if you are looking for easy and effective log splitting at home, and although it is very affordable, it is robust and will give you the high-performance season after season.

Logger Joe

High Performance

The Sun Joe LK10M is constructed from robust steel and has a 2-speed pump which can quickly produce up to 10 tons of force to easily split logs of up to 18 inches (45.7 cm) long. It features longer handles than other models, which give you the maximum leverage for your pump action to drive the ram forwards and split your logs.

Pump Action Splitter

Easy To Use

This log splitter is extremely simple to assemble and easy to use. To operate it you simply place a log lengthways on the beam, grip one handle in each hand and pump them alternately in a forward and backward motion. This pump action will drive the log against the wedge base, causing it to split. It is the same principle as electric or gas-powered log splitters, without the need for cables, fuel or batteries.

Unlike other models, this does not have an automatic return function. Instead, you will need to turn the hand wheel anti-clockwise to release the ram return spring, which will reset the ram in the starting position.

It may not be automatic, but it sure is simple! When you are finished splitting your logs, you can easily move your Sun Joe log splitter using its integrated wheels to put it away or move it to somewhere else to use it, and it is compact, so you can easily store it!

Swinging an axe to split logs, is tough on the body, and has a high risk of injury especially when not done safely, but it does have some fitness benefits, including aerobic activity and strength. With other log splitters, you eliminate most of the physical benefits, as this can be an advantage and exactly what you are looking for. With the Sun Joe LK10M, you still get some fitness benefits as you are personally powering the drive of the wedge. Having said that though, you don’t need to be particularly strong to operate it.

  • No fuel or cables required
  • Compact for easy storage

  • No auto-return valve

Overall, we think this is a fantastic log splitter to keep in your tool shed for using at home. While it is manually-powered and has a maximum log size capability compared to other models we have reviewed, if you are looking for a simple log splitter that is easy to use and doesn’t require fuel or cables, then this is a great choice.

YARDMAX YS0552 5-Ton Electric Log Splitter

The YARDMAX YS0552 is powerful, 5-ton electric log splitter that is designed to be used at your standing height. It gives you the perfect combination of performance and user-friendliness at an affordable price.

It is capable of tacking heavy-duty tasks – handling logs of up to 20.5 inches (52 cm) in length and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter. It is powered by an electric motor and therefore can be used indoors during the colder, winter months.

It has a fast cycle length and it can easily be moved as it is lightweight and with a set of wheels to make it portable. Included in the set, you get the electric motor, a stand, a log tray and a stroke limiter which shortened the splitting time for smaller logs.

Easy To Use

The YARDMAX is easy to use from when you first get it. You don’t need to perform any assembly for the benchtop unit, just clip the wheels on and you are ready to go! The stand brings the log splitter to up to a total size of 40.5 inches (102.9 cm) by 13.8 inches (35 cm) by 19.3inches (49 cm), meaning that you don’t need to squat or bend over it to operate it. It gives you a firm surface to work with and you don’t need to worry about the logs falling to the ground as they split, as they will stay in the log trays that support them.

It does, however, contain a Proposition 65 warning, which does not specify the reason or type of risk or level of risk that this equipment presents. For this reason, we would choose to use it outside rather than inside.

The two-handed operation keeps both of your hands busy so that they are kept away from the working surface to prevent you from injuries.

This splitter has a powerful 5-ton pressure as well as a short cylinder cycle time, taking only 16 seconds so that you can get through that log pile quickly! For the shorter logs you have, the stroke limiter shortens the time it takes to split them, making you even more efficient!

The frame features a set of 7-inch (17.8 cm) diameter wheels, and it is lightweight yet sturdy, so you can easily move your log splitter around with you. If you prefer to have a lower work are, the size without the stand is 40.5 inches (102.9 cm) by 17.7 inches (45 cm) by 39 inches (99 cm).

  • Minimal assembly
  • Can be used inside and outside
  • Lightweight
  • Sturdy
  • Powerful
  • Short cycle time

  • California residents – Proposition 65 warning

Overall, this log splitter, which is very easy to use is a great choice if you would like the ability to work while standing, rather than being limited to crouching. It has a fast cycle time, and it is simple and efficient. It is lightweight and portable yet sturdy and high powered.

Choosing Your Log Splitter – What Must You Look For?

There are a number of things to consider when choosing your log splitter – here are some features for you to consider to help you choose the right one for you:

Log size – how big are the logs you want to use it for? The beam will need to be longer than the length of the logs you are going to be splitting.

Type of wood – different varieties of wood have different levels of hardness, which is calculated using the Janka hardness test and a formula. Harder wood will require a splitter with a greater pressure capability. To make it much simpler, use our calculator at the top of this page to work out what tonnage you need.

Horizontal vs vertical – typically horizontal splitters are more suited for the lighter logs that you can lift onto the belt. Vertical splitters are able to tackle harder woods and are easier to use if you have heave logs as you don’t have to lift them high. Each model has different specifications though, and some are able to work both horizontally and vertically. Typically, horizontal log splitters are chosen for home use.

Power Source – you’ll need to consider where you will be using your log splitter. For example, if you will be using it in your garage, you will want a model which is powered by mains electric and does not give off any exhaust fumes. This gives you the bonus of consistent power which will not run out. If you are going to be using it away from power, then a gasoline-engine is more suitable so that you are not limited by cables. Gas powered options often louder and require more maintenance, but they generally give you lots of power in a short cycle time.

Portable – will you be moving your log splitter around a lot? If you will be using it in one place, then you probably only need to move it small distances,  so you will only need one with small wheels or one you can lift onto a tabletop. On the other hand, if you are often moving it between work sites, you may want one that can be towed, with highway-quality tires and a ball hitch coupler.

Speed – when looking at the cycle time, it is great to choose one that can power through logs in under 10 seconds, but realistically, if a log splitter takes less than 10 seconds to complete a cycle, the chances are that it will be a two-man job to keep up with it. Unless you plan to use it in a team, you are likely to want an efficient log splitter that can power through logs at a speed that a single pair of hands can comfortably keep pace with. Otherwise, accidents are more likely to happen.

How To Use A Log Splitter

Each log splitter model will be slightly different, and it is important that you follow the operation manual correctly, but here is a general guide of how to use a log splitter. Firstly, ensure that there is enough fuel and hydraulic oil in the system. If it is electrically powered, make sure you top up the hydraulic oil before you switch it on. Once it is topped up, you can power it up.

When handling the logs, hold them by the long, bark-covered sides, not by the sawn ends. Holding them along their sides will keep your hands safe from the splitting mechanism. Place a single log onto the beam and make sure that it is secure against the splitting wedge and in the cradle (if your model has a cradle).

How To Use A Log Splitter

You can now activate the splitter to begin putting pressure on the log. This will be a different mechanism for different types of log splitter – manual splitters will need you to start pumping the handles, while electric and gasoline-powered pumps will start up at the press of a button or turn of a dial.

Hydraulic vs Kinetic Log splitter

As you can see from the range of log splitters we have reviewed, the greater proportion of log splitter available are hydraulic, and the chances are that a hydraulic is the type of log splitter you are looking for. But what is the difference?

Hydraulic splitters apply a slower and steady pressure to the logs, against a wedge, and therefore have a slightly longer cycle time. Kinetic splitters are much faster, and will give pressure on the initial impact, but will not maintain much follow through pressure, like hitting a nail with a hammer. They, therefore, have a much shorter cycle time.

Kinetic Splitter

  • Very quick
  • Shorter cycle time (2-5 seconds)
  • Smaller cuts

  • Less powerful
  • Less suitable for wet or fresh logs

Hydraulic Splitter

  • Very powerful
  • Quite a short cycle time (10-30 seconds)
  • Effective for hardwoods, fresh wood and wet logs

  • Longer cycle time than kinetic
  • More maintenance (g. refilling hydraulic oil)

Overall, kinetic splitters are more suited to softer and well-seasoned wood, while hydraulic splitters are better for hard, green and wet logs.

Log Splitter vs An Axe

An axe has long been the go-to tool for log splitting, and there are benefits to using one, but incorrect use of an axe can cause you serious injuries and long-term harm. Log splitters are becoming a popular choice, and here is why:

Using an axe to split wood puts you at high risk of many injuries. An axe is a heavy addition to your body and there is a great deal of energy transferred to you as the axe comes into contact, often at speed, with the wood, which is absorbed by your muscles, bones and other body parts. Injuries that can result from this include:

  • Repetitive strain injury caused by swinging the weight of the axe (such as firewood elbow) or the vibration of the axe into your hands.
  • Twisting of your back with a heavyweight
  • Open wounds from striking your body with an axe

Log Splitting Methods

Aside from the injuries, there are also some practical reasons why people choose to use a log splitter over an axe.

Split A Wider Variety Of Wood

Softwoods and those which do not have knots in are far easier to split by hand compared to hardwoods and green woods, and often logs are not perfectly straight like we would hope for, making it harder to split them by hand. Also, consider the size of the wood that you are going to be splitting. Wood with a large diameter will take up more of your time, whether you go for an axe or a hydraulic log splitter method, but you will need a lot more effort to split it by hand, as opposed to rearranging the log on the splitter beam.

Suitable For Any Level Of Fitness

Splitting wood with an axe requires a reasonable amount of stamina physical strength, and depending on how much wood you have to split, you could be working at it for a while. Swinging an axe burns a lot of calories, but it can easily take its toll on your body, but using a log splitter can save you from the strain. You will still get a work out from lifting the logs on to the log splitter beam, and if you don’t want to lose all the physical advantages of using an ax, then consider getting a manual log splitter such as the Sun Joe LK10M, which you will need to pump to activate the hydraulic ram.

More Efficient And Quicker

This will, of course, vary for different types of wood, but generally using a log splitter is far quicker than splitting them by hand with an axe. Some models, such as the Champion 100251, are capable of completing up to 300 cycles per hour, which is far quicker than any human could manage! A log splitter also won’t get fatigued like a human, and if it has an automatic return then you can just concentrate on feeding and organizing the logs, while it does the hard work for you! Plus, by saving your energy, you’ll likely have longer sessions of using a log splitter than you would with an axe.

Log splitter: more cycles per hour + more hours spent = far more logs split each session

Minimal Maintenance

Granted, an axe is low-maintenance too – all you really need to so it sharpen it, and you may need to sharpen your log splitter’s wedge too occasionally. The only other maintenance you may need to do is sometimes top up the oil and fuel.

Some Log Splitters Can Be Used Indoors

If you choose one that is manually-powered or powered by electricity as opposed to one that requires gasoline, then you may be able to use it inside, saving you from working outside in the cold, wet winter months! This can also make it easier for you to find a flat surface to work on, which is necessary for many log splitters and harder to come by outside, especially in winter.

They Don’t Create Much Mess!

You will probably get some chips spreading around, and for that reason, it is important that you wear eye protection, but this is easy to sweep or rake up once you are done. Plus you can always collect them to use as tinder!

Remember to wear protective clothing when using your log splitter. Ideally, you should be wearing protective eye shields, gloves and sturdy boots to protect your feet from falling logs.

Using Your Log Splitter Safely

Finally, for the boring bit – a list of dos and don’ts to keep you safe while you are splitting logs:

  • Make sure you are wearing proper attire – goggles gloves and hard, closed toe boots are essential to protect you from flying chips and dropping logs. Make sure you are not wearing loose clothing, particularly if you are using a kinetic log splitter.
  • If your log splitter is gasoline-fuelled, use it only in an open area, never indoors.
  • Do not operate your splitter in wet, muddy or icy conditions.
  • Give it a quick once-over before you begin each use. Make sure that no parts are weak or broken or leaking.
  • Choose to work in an area which is well lit with level ground, and make sure that the log splitter is sat securely and not rocking.
  • Only use your log splitter to break apart wood, do not use if to break other items or materials
  • Make sure that you only hold the logs by their sides and not their ends – do not place your hands between the log and the splitting wedge or the ram.
  • Keep your workspace clean and organized. Remove any trip hazards before you switch on the log splitter.

Why Should You Split Logs?

If you are looking to create a fire, be it a large bonfire, small campfire or a cozy fire to snuggle up in front of in your living room, you will want dry wood that will easily catch fire and build to that roaring blaze quickly. Wood with a higher moisture content will take longer to get going and will create more smoke and steam and less fire.

Many tree species have an element of fire retardance to their bark, which protects them while they are growing and living, but that doesn’t help you when you are trying to build a fire. By splitting the wood, you are exposing the center and creating a bigger surface area to speed up the time it takes for the log to dry and a bigger area which can catch fire.

Fireplace Home

Log splitting, which you do lengthways, is easier than other methods which cut across the grain, because log splitting tears the log at its weakest part, along the grain. That also means that the two halves you are left with are stronger than other splitting methods may give you – perfect if you are splitting logs to create boards to build and craft items with. Log splitting is actually an ancient technique of preparing wood for other uses which is known to have been used by the Vikings for boat building.

What Is A Log Splitter & How Can It Help?

A log splitter is a piece of equipment which applies the same principle as swinging an axe to split a log in half, lengthways along to grain, at its weakest point, leaving two halves which are stronger than they likely would have been if other cutting methods had been used.

As log splitter can be in a vertical or horizontal in orientation and some can be moved to be used in both orientations. A horizontal splitter is typically chosen for household use or lighter-weight logs while a vertical splitter is typically for more heavy-duty work.

Using a log splitter is much quicker and far easier than splitting logs with an axe, and you aren’t taking the physical risks that you do with using an axe. You can greatly increase your productivity and save your energy by using a log splitter and lower your risk of injury.

Hopefully, you will now have a better idea of which log splitter is the right option for you and how to get the most out of your new equipment. A log splitter is a great addition to your tool shed whether you are a seasoned lumberjack or a keen DIY enthusiast. They can save you a great deal of time and effort and prevent you from serious injuries, so it is a worthwhile investment.
