Best Electric, Gas, Hydraulic & Manual Log Splitters
The winter is still in full swing, and every time you think Spring is on its way, Mother Nature sends another snow storm your way! It’s not all bad though – what’s better than snuggling up in a cozy blanket in front of a roaring fireplace?
But to have a fire, you need suitable logs, and just bringing in freshly-sawn logs fresh off the tree simply isn’t good enough. They need to be split to the right size to give you that cozy fire and splitting them manually can be hard work. Splitting logs with an axe takes time, effort and if you aren’t careful, you can end up with a serious, long-lasting injury.
The answer to this problem is a log splitter, which will do the hard work for you, saving you from potentially serious injuries and cutting your wood splitting time.

Choosing Your Log Splitter – What Must You Look For?
There are a number of things to consider when choosing your log splitter – here are some features for you to consider to help you choose the right one for you:
Log size – how big are the logs you want to use it for? The beam will need to be longer than the length of the logs you are going to be splitting.
Type of wood – different varieties of wood have different levels of hardness, which is calculated using the Janka hardness test and a formula. Harder wood will require a splitter with a greater pressure capability. To make it much simpler, use our calculator at the top of this page to work out what tonnage you need.
Horizontal vs vertical – typically horizontal splitters are more suited for the lighter logs that you can lift onto the belt. Vertical splitters are able to tackle harder woods and are easier to use if you have heave logs as you don’t have to lift them high. Each model has different specifications though, and some are able to work both horizontally and vertically. Typically, horizontal log splitters are chosen for home use.
Power Source – you’ll need to consider where you will be using your log splitter. For example, if you will be using it in your garage, you will want a model which is powered by mains electric and does not give off any exhaust fumes. This gives you the bonus of consistent power which will not run out. If you are going to be using it away from power, then a gasoline-engine is more suitable so that you are not limited by cables. Gas powered options often louder and require more maintenance, but they generally give you lots of power in a short cycle time.
Portable – will you be moving your log splitter around a lot? If you will be using it in one place, then you probably only need to move it small distances, so you will only need one with small wheels or one you can lift onto a tabletop. On the other hand, if you are often moving it between work sites, you may want one that can be towed, with highway-quality tires and a ball hitch coupler.
Speed – when looking at the cycle time, it is great to choose one that can power through logs in under 10 seconds, but realistically, if a log splitter takes less than 10 seconds to complete a cycle, the chances are that it will be a two-man job to keep up with it. Unless you plan to use it in a team, you are likely to want an efficient log splitter that can power through logs at a speed that a single pair of hands can comfortably keep pace with. Otherwise, accidents are more likely to happen.
How To Use A Log Splitter
Each log splitter model will be slightly different, and it is important that you follow the operation manual correctly, but here is a general guide of how to use a log splitter. Firstly, ensure that there is enough fuel and hydraulic oil in the system. If it is electrically powered, make sure you top up the hydraulic oil before you switch it on. Once it is topped up, you can power it up.
When handling the logs, hold them by the long, bark-covered sides, not by the sawn ends. Holding them along their sides will keep your hands safe from the splitting mechanism. Place a single log onto the beam and make sure that it is secure against the splitting wedge and in the cradle (if your model has a cradle).
You can now activate the splitter to begin putting pressure on the log. This will be a different mechanism for different types of log splitter – manual splitters will need you to start pumping the handles, while electric and gasoline-powered pumps will start up at the press of a button or turn of a dial.
Hydraulic vs Kinetic Log splitter
As you can see from the range of log splitters we have reviewed, the greater proportion of log splitter available are hydraulic, and the chances are that a hydraulic is the type of log splitter you are looking for. But what is the difference?
Hydraulic splitters apply a slower and steady pressure to the logs, against a wedge, and therefore have a slightly longer cycle time. Kinetic splitters are much faster, and will give pressure on the initial impact, but will not maintain much follow through pressure, like hitting a nail with a hammer. They, therefore, have a much shorter cycle time.
- Very quick
- Shorter cycle time (2-5 seconds)
- Smaller cuts
- Less powerful
- Less suitable for wet or fresh logs
- Very powerful
- Quite a short cycle time (10-30 seconds)
- Effective for hardwoods, fresh wood and wet logs
- Longer cycle time than kinetic
- More maintenance (g. refilling hydraulic oil)
Log Splitter vs An Axe
An axe has long been the go-to tool for log splitting, and there are benefits to using one, but incorrect use of an axe can cause you serious injuries and long-term harm. Log splitters are becoming a popular choice, and here is why:
Using an axe to split wood puts you at high risk of many injuries. An axe is a heavy addition to your body and there is a great deal of energy transferred to you as the axe comes into contact, often at speed, with the wood, which is absorbed by your muscles, bones and other body parts. Injuries that can result from this include:
- Repetitive strain injury caused by swinging the weight of the axe (such as firewood elbow) or the vibration of the axe into your hands.
- Twisting of your back with a heavyweight
- Open wounds from striking your body with an axe
Aside from the injuries, there are also some practical reasons why people choose to use a log splitter over an axe.
Split A Wider Variety Of Wood
Softwoods and those which do not have knots in are far easier to split by hand compared to hardwoods and green woods, and often logs are not perfectly straight like we would hope for, making it harder to split them by hand. Also, consider the size of the wood that you are going to be splitting. Wood with a large diameter will take up more of your time, whether you go for an axe or a hydraulic log splitter method, but you will need a lot more effort to split it by hand, as opposed to rearranging the log on the splitter beam.
Suitable For Any Level Of Fitness
Splitting wood with an axe requires a reasonable amount of stamina physical strength, and depending on how much wood you have to split, you could be working at it for a while. Swinging an axe burns a lot of calories, but it can easily take its toll on your body, but using a log splitter can save you from the strain. You will still get a work out from lifting the logs on to the log splitter beam, and if you don’t want to lose all the physical advantages of using an ax, then consider getting a manual log splitter such as the Sun Joe LK10M, which you will need to pump to activate the hydraulic ram.
More Efficient And Quicker
This will, of course, vary for different types of wood, but generally using a log splitter is far quicker than splitting them by hand with an axe. Some models, such as the Champion 100251, are capable of completing up to 300 cycles per hour, which is far quicker than any human could manage! A log splitter also won’t get fatigued like a human, and if it has an automatic return then you can just concentrate on feeding and organizing the logs, while it does the hard work for you! Plus, by saving your energy, you’ll likely have longer sessions of using a log splitter than you would with an axe.
Log splitter: more cycles per hour + more hours spent = far more logs split each session
Granted, an axe is low-maintenance too – all you really need to so it sharpen it, and you may need to sharpen your log splitter’s wedge too occasionally. The only other maintenance you may need to do is sometimes top up the oil and fuel.
Some Log Splitters Can Be Used Indoors
If you choose one that is manually-powered or powered by electricity as opposed to one that requires gasoline, then you may be able to use it inside, saving you from working outside in the cold, wet winter months! This can also make it easier for you to find a flat surface to work on, which is necessary for many log splitters and harder to come by outside, especially in winter.
They Don’t Create Much Mess!
You will probably get some chips spreading around, and for that reason, it is important that you wear eye protection, but this is easy to sweep or rake up once you are done. Plus you can always collect them to use as tinder!
Using Your Log Splitter Safely
Finally, for the boring bit – a list of dos and don’ts to keep you safe while you are splitting logs:
- Make sure you are wearing proper attire – goggles gloves and hard, closed toe boots are essential to protect you from flying chips and dropping logs. Make sure you are not wearing loose clothing, particularly if you are using a kinetic log splitter.
- If your log splitter is gasoline-fuelled, use it only in an open area, never indoors.
- Do not operate your splitter in wet, muddy or icy conditions.
- Give it a quick once-over before you begin each use. Make sure that no parts are weak or broken or leaking.
- Choose to work in an area which is well lit with level ground, and make sure that the log splitter is sat securely and not rocking.
- Only use your log splitter to break apart wood, do not use if to break other items or materials
- Make sure that you only hold the logs by their sides and not their ends – do not place your hands between the log and the splitting wedge or the ram.
- Keep your workspace clean and organized. Remove any trip hazards before you switch on the log splitter.
Why Should You Split Logs?
If you are looking to create a fire, be it a large bonfire, small campfire or a cozy fire to snuggle up in front of in your living room, you will want dry wood that will easily catch fire and build to that roaring blaze quickly. Wood with a higher moisture content will take longer to get going and will create more smoke and steam and less fire.
Many tree species have an element of fire retardance to their bark, which protects them while they are growing and living, but that doesn’t help you when you are trying to build a fire. By splitting the wood, you are exposing the center and creating a bigger surface area to speed up the time it takes for the log to dry and a bigger area which can catch fire.
Log splitting, which you do lengthways, is easier than other methods which cut across the grain, because log splitting tears the log at its weakest part, along the grain. That also means that the two halves you are left with are stronger than other splitting methods may give you – perfect if you are splitting logs to create boards to build and craft items with. Log splitting is actually an ancient technique of preparing wood for other uses which is known to have been used by the Vikings for boat building.
What Is A Log Splitter & How Can It Help?
A log splitter is a piece of equipment which applies the same principle as swinging an axe to split a log in half, lengthways along to grain, at its weakest point, leaving two halves which are stronger than they likely would have been if other cutting methods had been used.
As log splitter can be in a vertical or horizontal in orientation and some can be moved to be used in both orientations. A horizontal splitter is typically chosen for household use or lighter-weight logs while a vertical splitter is typically for more heavy-duty work.
Hopefully, you will now have a better idea of which log splitter is the right option for you and how to get the most out of your new equipment. A log splitter is a great addition to your tool shed whether you are a seasoned lumberjack or a keen DIY enthusiast. They can save you a great deal of time and effort and prevent you from serious injuries, so it is a worthwhile investment.
